In Iceland, bathing is not a spa treatment. It is a way of life. For as long as people have lived here, geothermal water has been the centre of the community — where neighbours meet, where news is traded, where the day is discussed and the cold is forgotten. Every town has its pool, and every Icelander has a story that starts in a hot spring.
Our springs
Geothermal water rises naturally from the land at Stóru-Laugar, and it has done so for centuries — the farm's name, Laugar, means "hot springs." We have simply given it somewhere to gather.
Our outdoor bathing area has two natural hot springs, a cold plunge for the brave, and a sauna. Outdoor showers complete the ritual. Everything sits under the open sky, facing the valley, so that on a clear summer night you bathe in the light of the midnight sun — and in September, with luck, beneath the northern lights.
We use no chemicals in our hot springs. The hot water runs steadily through them, renewing itself every few hours, and every few days we empty the springs and scrub them by hand. Nothing added — only wonderful, energising hot water straight from the ground.
